Guide to Using Other Libraries
Contact the WSPP Librarian with any questions.
When you send the WSPP Librarian ILL requests through PsycINFO, she will see if they are available at a local library such as Marquette, UW-Milwaukee or the Medical College. She will then let you know which journal is at which library so you can go there and get the articles you need.
Policies on WSPP students obtaining articles and etc. not in the WSPP library’s collection.
The basic policy is that you must get articles, reports, and dissertations from local libraries when they are available before the WSPP librarian will request the item through Interlibrary loan systems. This prevents the overuse of systems meant to supplement hard to find materials and is in keeping with ethical library practices.Which Library should you go to?
You will want to verify that the library you are considering going to has the book, AV or journal you want. Some Universities have more than one library on their campus, make sure you know which library has the material you want before you go. Please note that most libraries will not lend out AV materials.Books: Verify on WISCAT or the Library’s catalog (web site addresses are at the end of this document) that they have the book you want. Make sure you verify it’s the edition you want by publication date or edition statement.
Also, remember to find out if the book is available and not checked out. You will need to use the library’s on-line catalog to verify the check-out status of the book.Journals: Verify on WISCAT or the Library’s catalog that they have the journal title you want, and that they have the volume and issue in their holdings that you need.
Many Libraries now have electronic journals online, because of copyright you will need to be onsite at the Library to use most electronic journals. Since you will be using journal articles for research purposes once you get to the library you should have the right to download articles. You may need to pay a nominal fee for reproducing the articles or email the article to yourself or download to a thumb drive.
Dissertations:
When you need a dissertation published at another institution it can be obtained through various methods, depending on the policies of that institution. Students interested in obtaining non-WSPP dissertations should contact the Librarian. Students will be invoiced for any costs incurred with obtaining a dissertation.
Options for obtaining materials from other libraries:
- Go there and copy materials if it’s a journal article or book chapter you want. Most libraries allow for the on site use of materials. Depending on the Library you may need to check-in and get a pass for the day.
- You can use an InfoPass to borrow materials from any participating InfoPass library. Please ask your librarian for more information.
- You can purchase a borrowing card from a library such as Marquette ($5, must have WSPP ID) or MCW ($35). A few libraries offer this option. Of course you can get a library card from your local public library to borrow their resources.
- You can request an Inter library loan (I.L.L.) from the WSPP Librarian. ILL’s are used if the only library that has the materials you want is a long distance away. WSPP Students will be charged back for any I.L.L. expenses, usually between $5-$17 per item.
Borrowing Cards
Marquette Library 1355 W. Wisconsin Ave.Milwaukee, WI (414) 288-7214
Through a special agreement with Marquette University; WSPP students may obtain a Marquette ID to borrow materials from their library.
In order to obtain an ID from Marquette, you must have a valid WSPP Student ID card.
At the front desk of the Marquette Library present your WSPP Student ID. You will get a voucher to use at the library for the day and to obtain a Courtesy Card in their student union for $5.00.
The person at the front desk may not be familiar with WSPP’s special agreement with Marquette, ask them to get a supervisor to help you. That way you will not be overcharged for an ID. Books are loaned for 28 days and only 10 items can be checked out with your Marquette ID.
Inter-Library Loan (ILL)
When an item such as a book or journal you need an article from is not owned locally, it is usually possible to inter-library loan (ILL) it from other Libraries. All inter-library loan requests must be made directly to the WSPP Librarian. Please make sure that the WSPP Library does not own an item, before you request it through ILL.
Borrowing Privileges:
Borrowing materials from other libraries is a privilege; students are asked to take great care when using materials form other Libraries. Any abuse of loaned materials will prevent other WSPP students from further borrowing materials from that Library in the future.UNIVERSITY LIBRARY CATALOGS
